Video coding, Audio coding and Multiplexing Specifications for Digital Broadcasting Overview of the ARIB Standard (ARIB STD-B32)

This ARIB standard stipulates video signals and their coding scheme, audio signals and their coding scheme, and the multiplexing scheme for transmission signals in digital broadcast. The scope of this technical report is media-transversal, as specified in 1 Scope below. However, the technical report is to be revised when a standard is set for any digital-broadcasting media thus far remaining unincorporated therein (digital-satellite sound broadcast, etc.), so as to include it in the scope.

(Note that this standard shall not apply to sound signals and the coding scheme for data broadcast.)

Part 3: Multiplexing Scheme of Transmission Signals

Digital terrestrial television broadcast, Digital satellite broadcast, Digital broadband communication satellite broadcast, and Digital terrestrial sound broadcast

Except in cases in which a further special provision is made.


2. Composition and overview

This technical report is composed of the following three parts:

Part 1: Video Signals and Coding Scheme
Part 2: Audio Signals and Coding Scheme
Part 3: Multiplexing Scheme of Transmission Signals

Part 1 stipulates the video input format (video signal, signal sample, scanning direction, video-signal parameters), video-coding scheme (a combination of the movement-compensation prediction coding scheme, the discrete cosine transform scheme, and the variable-length coding scheme), compression procedures for the video signal and the transmission procedure thereof, signal construction following the coding, and constraints on the coding parameters. Further, the operating guidelines in the appendix specify the recommended technological conditions for actual operations concerning the transmission of a sequence header and a sequence end code, the channel switching time, seamless switching, and an encoding example in the case of a film material.

Part 2 stipulates the audio input signal (sampling frequency, number of quantization bits, etc.), audio-coding scheme (a combination of the time-frequency conversion coding scheme and the auditory psychology-weighted bit allocation scheme), compression procedures and transmission procedures for the audio, and constraints on the audio -coding parameters. Further, the operating guidelines in the appendix specify the recommended technological conditions in actual operations concerning sound-quality representation (representation of sound quality in one of three modes: mode 1, 2, or 3), and the switching of audio parameters (sampling frequency, bit rate, etc.).

Part 3 stipulates the multiplexing scheme (coding signal, transmission control signal, emergency warning signal) and the multiplexed-signal formats ( PES packet, section format, TS packet, composition of the transmission control signal, composition of descriptors, composition of identifiers, and composition of related information, as well as the compositions of ECM and EMM and the transmission procedures thereof. )
