1.   Objectives and Significance of the Conference

International Conference on Beyond 3G Mobile Communications has been held alternately in the three countries of China, South Korea and Japan after its first meeting in Beijing, China, in November 2002.   Its sixth meeting, ICB3G-2008, will be convened in Tokyo, Japan.

At the October 2007 Radiocommunication Assembly 2007 (RA-07), a new draft resolution that defines the naming structure of IMT systems, including gIMT-Advancedh, and a new draft resolution that specifies the basic principles for the future standardization activities of gIMT-Advancedh were adopted.  Furthermore, in the subsequent World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07), concrete spectrum bands to be assigned for gIMT-Advancedh were identified as a result of deliberations pertaining to its spectrum-related issues.  It is therefore expected that standardization activities for gIMT-Advancedh systems will gain momentum on a global scale toward its commercialization in the future.

Against this backdrop, it was decided to organize this international conference gathering experts from principal countries/regions to hold discussions on each countryfs standardization efforts for gIMT-Advancedh as Beyond 3G systems, its prospects for commercialization from a technical standpoint and its future expectations from the perspective of services, and thereby contribute to facilitating the research, development and standardization of gIMT-Advancedh.
