In recent years the information and communication industry of the world is growing rapidly. The wireless communication and the mobile communication service is the major part of the growth. The expansion and the diversification of the use of the mobile communication are major driving forces in the growth of the telecommunication business in Japan. The broadband technology of mobile communication is creating various new usage of communication. The improvement of services and growth of its business depend on the research and development by manufacturers and the creative service development by carriers as well as the high interest of end users. Total number of cellular phone and PHS subscribers in Japan has reached the level of greater than 100 million at the end of January in 2007.
To continue the growth of the industry and services, it has been realized that new generation high performance multimedia wireless system development is essential. The objective of the development is to realize high speed mobile communication system having capability comparable to the fiber to the home based broadband network.
In December 1996, "The Multimedia Mobile Access Communication Systems (MMAC) Promotion Council" was established by the cooperation of users, carriers, manufacturers as well as academia aiming to achieve such a broadband wireless system. The objective of the Council was to propose a high performance wireless system to be used after IMT-2000. We wished to realize communication systems, which allow any person can communicate "at anytime and at any place". As the result of MMAC activity and international cooperation, we have contributed to the study of the present broadband wireless systems that are being used globally in everyday life. We think that this is a big accomplishment of MMAC.
Hoping that MMAC can continue to contribute to the global society in the development of an advanced wireless system, in June 2004, we changed the name of our group to "The Multimedia Mobile Access Communication Systems Forum (MMAC Forum)".
In the following, you will find an outline of our Forum. We look forward to your continuing support and understanding on our activities, for rich global human society created by wireless technology.
