1. Overview

TR Number ARIB TR-B26
Technical Report Name Operational Guidelines for Digital Satellite Sound Broadcasting
Enactment Date 10.16.2003
General Description

This technical report identifies a technical parameter to be used in actual operation, and defines the detail of operation for digital satellite sound broadcasting among standard television broadcasting, which is executed according to the Ordinance and Notification of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the ARIB standard.

These specifications are considered to secure flexibility of programming for digital satellite sound broadcasting and extensibility for the future development of broadcasting service.

This operational guideline defines the detailed function of a receiver, according to ARIB STD-B42.

The broadcasting company of the digital satellite sound broadcasting should operate its playout under the condition of established function specifications to perform digital satellite sound broadcasting service smoothly without spoiling the convenience of listeners.

Here, the realization of the function specifications of the receiver is entrusted to the product plan of a receiver manufacture company.

 Keywords

Keyword Description
Download (service) This is to deliver and store receiver software and common data for all receivers in the nonvolatile memory of the receivers for terrestrial digital broadcasting through the broadcasting wave.
Data broadcasting

This is a broadcasting service to combine simple video images, still images, characters, graphics, and subtitles with normal sounds.

The target of data broadcasting in the digital satellite sound broadcasting is car reception (car navigation system) and mobile reception (cell-phone, PDA).

PSI

Abbreviation of Program Specific Information.

This is an information necessary to choose a target program.

It consists of PAT (Program Association Table), PMT (Program Map Table), NIT (Network Information Table) and CAT (Conditional Access Table).

It is specified in the MPEG system standard and Ordinance of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

SI

Abbreviation of Service Information.

This is a various information specified for the convenience of program choice. It is defined in Ordinance of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Its content is specified in the ARIB standard. In addition to extend the original parts of the ARIB standard, the PSI information of MPEG-2 is included.

SBR

Abbreviation of Spectral Band Replication

This is a sound encoding method which is relatively effective in the case of a low bit rate. The information is stored in the fill element of ADTS and is used for the interpolation of high range of AAC. A receiver without the SBR function has backward compatibility to reproduce AAC.

CAS

Abbreviation of Conditional Access System.

This is a system to control the viewing of service (programming channel) and event (contents).

Interactive communication
(interactive data broadcasting service)

This is a service to combine data communication with broadcasting.

It is assumed that the receiver has a function to communicate with data processing center by connecting it to a public telephone network, a PHS network, a mobile telephone network, ISDN, ADSL, FTTH, and CATV.

CDM

Abbreviation of Code Division Multiplex.

This is a method to disperse the frequency band of a signal directly by a different spread code in every channel, and to multiplex plural channels in the same frequency band, followed by sending it out in a transmission channel.

TS

Abbreviation of Transport Stream.

This is a transport stream specified in the MPEG-2 system standard (ISO/IEC 13818-1).
