Overview of Standards and Technical Reports

Overview of ARIB Standards (STD-T56)

1. Overview

STD Number ARIB STD-T56
Standard Name Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Estimation and Power Density Estimation for Cellular Phone
General Description

This document defines the standard measurement methods for evaluating the suitability of the portable wireless terminal such as a mobile phone for the local absorption guidelines.

Defined are the methods of measurements and evaluation, as well as the calculation of total irradiation ratio during multiband simultaneous transmission, for the specific absorption rate (SAR) at frequencies below 6GHz and the relative incident power density at frequencies above 6GHz.

2. Amendment History

Ver. Amendment or Enactment Date Amendment summary
4.0 12.05.2019

The standard measurement method of the power density for the wireless equipment that uses frequencies above 6GHz near the human body is newly added as the second part, in which the power density measurement method, the evaluation method, and the calculation method of the total exposure ratio when transmitting at multiple frequency bands at the same time etc. are specified.

This time, the version is changed to 4.0 to reflect the magnitude of changes such as the addition of both frequency ranges and measurement methods of interest, as well as the standard name.

3.3 12.03.2015 Revise with the description of SAR measurement method for radio equipment in case of using closely to temporal area of human body, when transmitting at extended frequency band or at multiple frequency bands at the same time, in accordance with amendment to Ministerial Ordinance (Ordinance Regulating Radio Equipment 14-2-2).
3.2 03.18.2014 Revise with measurement method for radio equipment in case of using close to human body other than temporal area, in accordance with amendment to Ministerial Ordinance.
3.1 12.18.2012 Information and Communications Council reported “‘Measurement Method of SAR for radio equipment using closely to human body other than temporal area’, as a part of ‘Measurement Method of SAR for portable devices’” in October, 2011 to Consultation No. 118., and responding to the report, revise with appropriate description to secure consistency with the report referencing the latest radio technology trend.
3.0 07.07.2011

Revise existing “ARIB STD-T56 Ver. 2.0” with detailed technical requirements and technical explanation for practical measurement of SAR, securing consistency with the latest standards of standardization body in the world.

In more concrete, based on the report from Information and Communications Council, clarifying the targeting object is radio equipment in the proximity within 20 cm of human body, and extending the upper limit of frequency band from 3 GHz to 6 GHz (for portable device and the like used closely to temporal area of human body the upper limit is 3 GHz), change the related descriptions.

2.0 01.24.2002 In accordance with promulgation of Notification No.628 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (October 10, 2001), clarify the detailed technical requirements and conditions for accurate measurement, and secure consistency with standards in standardization bodies in the world (IEEE, CENELEC, IEC).
